The New Year Brings New Opportunities to Get Involved

Wishing you a happy and healthy 2022! We are honored to serve our wonderful community and are thankful for Brea’s strong spirit that has helped carry us through an extraordinary, and at times, a challenging 2021. As we enter this new year, there are new opportunities to get further involved with your local government and there are a few helpful reminders to share. The City invites you to join interactive workshops, scheduled in the next weeks, as part of the transition to a by-district election system. The community is encouraged to attend the workshops to learn about the process and provide their input. Also, the Brea Fitness Center has new fitness opportunities for the New Year, and the Brea Gallery is showcasing a new exhibit for all to enjoy. Please read about these exciting details, and more, in this issue below.

Districting Engagement Opportunities

Like many cities in our region, Brea is faced with developing voting districts for use during future City Council elections. Brea currently uses an at-large election system, in which all voters in the City have the opportunity to vote for candidates for all five seats representing the City Council. Currently, City Council candidates may reside anywhere in the City, and they each provide city-wide representation. A by-district election system is one in which the City is physically divided into voting districts, each with one City Council Member who resides in the district and is chosen by the electors residing in that corresponding district.

The City is hosting two interactive workshops as part of the transition to a by-district election system. The community is encouraged to attend the workshops to learn about the process and be able to draw and submit their own district map for consideration. The workshop presentations will be available via Zoom.

  • Wednesday, January 12, from 6 – 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, February 12, from 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Location: Brea Community Center | 695 E Madison Way, Brea, CA 92821

Promoting Water Conservation

As a result of California’s scarce water resources, water conservation has become a normal way of life. The City of Brea adopted the Water Shortage Contingency Response Ordinance 1221 last summer in preparation for the state’s current drought conditions. Although there was a considerable amount of rain in December, it is imperative to continue conserving water to protect supplies. Wasteful practices are always prohibited under statewide restrictions. Below are a few friendly watering reminders:

  • From October to April, water two days a week (Monday and Friday).
  • It is prohibited to water between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Limit watering to 10 minutes per station.
  • Washing down hard or paved surfaces is prohibited, with certain exceptions.
  • No watering during or 48 hours after a rain event.

The Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) offers consumers more information regarding water savings tips and rebates.

The next Brea City Council meeting is on Tuesday, January 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers, located on the Plaza Level of the Brea Civic & Cultural Center, 1 Civic Center Circle. The Brea Gallery

The “Call for Entries” for the 2022 Made in California (MICA) exhibit is now open. Art entries can be made before the deadline on February 18.

This annual juried exhibit showcases artwork from all over the State of California. MICA strives to highlight artists in all stages of their careers and offers them a chance to compete for a number of cash prizes, as well as the coveted solo show opportunity. This regional show features artwork from an extensive variety of mediums and explores creative movements happening in California.

Street Sweeping

As a reminder, street sweeping is provided twice a month in the City of Brea for both residential and commercial areas. The goal of the Street Sweeping Program is to maintain the safety and cleanliness of City streets by minimizing the accumulation of debris in roadways and along curbs. Sweeping also significantly reduces pollution.

Depending on location, streets will be swept on either:

  • The first and third weeks of the month
  • The second and fourth weeks of the month
